I was speaking to a new friend of mine at my unit; apparently he used to be on a navy eod dive team. As we go to talking, we discussed the Mark 16 rebreather unit that he had used. Apparently it is heliox based, and is (according to the manual) capable of 300 feet for 300 minutes. Apparently the limiting factor is the scrubber (I forgot exactly what he called it). Apparently the mask has a red/green LED indicator that tells if the mixture becomes hypoxic/hyperoxic, at which time you must manually change the mixture. He also mentioned that some work at been done where the scrubber had been enlarged which increased the dive time. He was fairly vague about this, as he hadnt actually dived with it like this. Anyone else dove this system before? Any more information, or is it classified, and I'm actually spilling beans?? PPS, he did admit that there is NO bailout system, and he has never had to do any deco dives on it (as far as the navy was concerned; apparently it takes quite a bit of rank to authorize this..)
