Subject: Re: women in diving
It is a fact that in final analysis men's physical athletic performance
is superior to womens. Women do not compete with men on the world
athletic stage. So physically men are different to women. Mentally,
I do not know of any definitive measurement that can seperate men and women
so I am prepared to assume an even distribution of potential of mental ability.

Diving is a physical activity but there is no need to be superhuman to do
it and it requires the right mental attitude. So far, I can see no reason
why as many women as men shouldn't be doing it. There are a lot of women
involved in sport diving ( 40-45% of my club are women ) but very few are
interested extended range or technical diving. They are often bored by the
discussion of kit configuration equipment, decompression theory, gas mixing
and other such topics or at least rarely contribute to them, if not
actively avoid them. I think in the main that the reason there are more
men than women in the technical diving comunity is more a question of
inclination and motivation than anything else. If as a woman you want to
be accepted as being a competent diver at the highest level then forget
about being a woman and just dive. Ask for no special consideration and
pull your weight. That's what everybody else who's any good does. If a few
men get their noses out of joint because you can do things as well or better
than them then they are just wusses and not worth the time of day.
However, don't expect to be cut slack if you are not up to the job.

If women aren't leading the way in diving you have to ask why ? There are
only two possible reasons:-

	1) They can't.
	2) They don't want to.

If they wanted to badly enough then they'd be trying harder and doing it.
There is no faction in diving that I know of that is actively obstructing
women so there are only the possibilties listed above.

Cheers,
Andy.
