> MIke - two things you should be flamed for: 1) you don't read the > posts, and 2) you don;t read the posts. I think we both share the prize of not reading the post and understanding how numeris people could read it differently. I quote... Just imagine the horror you might experience, (1) while exiting one of these "tour" caves, when you (2) hit what you think is the end of an exit line only to see no sinkhole, because someone has cut the line back so far from the entrance that the daylight is not perceptible(god help you if its nighttime). Now(3), you're getting low on air and you backtrack,..... (end quote) I've inserted the #'s. (1) sounds like a PLANNED exit to me from a "tour" (picture in my mind is large clear, no silt) cave, meaning that (2) should not happen because if you PLANNED the exit at this location there would be a guideline from the weenie reel (your words) to show you the way out. Now in (3) you realize you are lost. That is one interpretation (and I think its a fair one), which is how it struck me the first time, and apparently (judging by other posts) I'm not the only one who read it that way. The other which is how I believe you are reading it, is that sometime along the dive you get lost (shit happens, no implication of being a bad diver), so that when you get to (1) which you THOUGHT was supposed to be your exit (2) and (3) (2+3 = shit) happens. I'd say thats an equally valid way of reading it. Mindset of a newbie reading a cave post: study the technique discussed. Newbie guessing the mindset of experienced caver: got the technique down, lets examine the policy issues. > reel, and that line were cut back 400 feet , like it is in Peacok and the > Yucatan caves mentioned in the post, what wooud you do, especially if > you were now low on gas and having a bad day. Do you need me to answer > this fo you ? ( you would die, tough guy)- G I wasn't commenting on the policy as much as I was questioning the diving practices. As for the policy (IMHO) you can do one of two things : 1-TRY (and fail) to protect the OW divers by hiding the lines making it harder for the cavers. 2-Protect the cave divers by having every arrow point toward the closest exit which has a guideline running all the way up into parking lot surrounding by 10 neon blinking signs telling the non-suicidal OW divers to stay the hell out. (of course if you do that, then when are us newbies going to get to run line?)(and then who will buy all those reels? :-) ) Mike PS. Just to yank your chain a little more, you cross-posted my article. I only posted to techdiver :-) I don't really care (I was replying to an article I only saw on techdiver) it belonged on cavers more anyway, but you always wonder how these things bleed from lists to list....this is how.
