>Will GUE fill the gap? The "gap" is part of the problem, too many unqualified divers taking cave instruction and getting cards. Reduce the numbers and require reevaluation. Our cave resources are already overtaxed and not just at spots like ginnie springs where on any given weekend you spend more time avoiding divers than seeing cave. Maybe this is an artificial way of capping enrollment. Good. Too many whiners , "I payed my 500, 600, 700 dollars, now I want my card". This reminds me of the "Scooter Policy" issue.....we all know what that was about...if you had the skills you could use your scooter(even without card).....but it was the one's who whined the loudest who had no business on a scooter anywhere but in their bathtub (rubber duckies beware). Bottom line.......if you question your ability to prove yourself and demonstrate the requsite skills to Mike either via card, membership or checkout dive......should you really be diving in Caves? Those of you who know your stuff have nothing to worry about and the rest should seek consultation from those that know. GUE is the place to go, and now no one can claim, "I didn't know". -----Original Message----- From: OSTDIVE@ao*.co* [SMTP:OSTDIVE@ao*.co*] Sent: Thursday, April 06, 2000 2:16 PM To: cavers@cavers.com Subject: Re: Diving at Madison Blue Thanks Mike, I think this is a reasonalble alternative. I understand your frustration. I, like many, was taught by Tyler before GUE and have joined GUE as soon as the organization was formed, at the regular level. I did this because of my respect for Tyler, JJ and all others. I wish I could easily affect a change in the CDS, other than voting, but am located out of state at school. I think the answer is democracy, ultimately, the vote. This is a first step in a change for the better I hope. A new generation of divers is coming up with a better way. Evolution works with organizations as well as biology. I remember when some of the WKPP people ran for office. GUE is an high level teaching organization and as such ahs the advantage in being small and lean. But if we destroy the NACD or CDS. Will GUE fill the gap; and more importantly, if it grows will it be possible to avoid the pitfalls, inherent in a larger organization? I hope so. I have faith in GUE. I think we all should join GUE and then change, toghether, the other organizations for the better. They once were good and served a needed purpose. Remeber the 60's? Thanks for listening to a longer post than I like. My two cents anyway. Mark Ost
