Subject: RE: Solo Diving Article, NACD

Tim,
I am an Instructor for and a Director of the NACD, but at this time I will
speak only my opinion and not that of the BOD. We are in discussion about this
issue and more information will follow. Check the next issue of the NACD
Journal.
I am appalled at Mr. Rennaker's article on solo-diving and can not believe
that he still holds these beliefs. I have overheard him tell this type of
information to classes and have been witness to numerous "slams" on the net.
One only has to open his eyes and look to see that this view-point is flawed,
and that there is a better way.
When there is only one publication that attempts to accurately represent its
members, at times there will be articles that others will not agree with.
However, it should be considered an error that the article was not prefaced w/
a disclaimer from the NACD stating that such beliefs do not represent the
organization.
There are still a few people on the "solo" side of the fence and these
people are entitled to state their opinions and reasons why. I have yet to
hear a valid argument for such activity on a regular basis. Mr. Rennaker makes
a very poor and extremely misguided attempt to validate his views by comparing
them to side mount applications. His statement "In fact, should not cave
diving demand a solo 1500-foot penetration to insure you have learned your
lessons well?", and his "glorification" of solo cave diving will add to the
fatality rates we experience.
Too many people are already going "too far, too fast" and have died. I see
divers w/ less than 35 dives and only 8 months of experience on scooters. This
is one of the points that lead to the untimely death of Mike Wixson, there will
be others. With Rennakers article, I am afraid that someone who does not take
him w/ a grain of salt per se, will read it and think he is right, then they
will die.
As for the NACD statement, I will work with the other BOD members and get
back with everyone.

Sincerely,
Scott Hunsucker
Director, NACD
