Alfred... it sounds like you're saying that the "premise" of DIR is that there's only one solution. I don't agree. There is some degree of truth to that, but it's more of a conclusion than the premise. A better way to sum it up is simply not to settle for 2nd best. If somebody gives a clear and convincing argument for a new system of doing things, DIR divers evolve. I just want to encourage you to look a little deeper here. I suspect you'll find that on the whole, DIR divers tend to be more capable of explaining why they do what they do than the diving public at large. What you're seeing here is lots of people independently recognizing "that's a damn good idea" and choosing to adopt it. It's not to be part of a clique, it's not because "my instructor said so", and it's not to spite some evil menace who dives differently. It's just because it works better than any other system, and there's no reason to settle for less than that. BTW, if there were multiple "best" solutions it would have to be because we had different requirements, right? Well, divers have a lot more in common than not, as far as this is concerned. How many divers do you know who need to make it harder to donate air to their buddy? Or who need more drag in the water? How many need to sink like a rock and be unable to ascend? Or to be so stoned during the dive they make stupid mistakes? I hope you'll agree that NOBODY needs that stuff. So, don't be surprised one solution works so well in so many different situations. The fundamentals remain the same.
