This in my sometimes humble opinion is one of the biggest problems in cave diving. The inexperience in resolving the simpliest of problems of someone like this is a death waiting to happen. I've seen full cave certified divers who have problems clearing a mask. Same thing happens with just about any technical course. I've heard rumor of a shop in the area teaching trimix at the same time as full cave. More and more I think that the concept of organized technical courses as opposed to mentorship is a losing proposition. I'm sure I'll get a dozen e-mails from pissed off instructors.
