John Besides the guys obvious lack of experience, it sounds as if he skipped cavern, intro, and apprentice levels. Hopefully no instructor would allow that. But its no worse than someone going on to become an OW instructor with only six dives. The instrucror would have the potential to affect a lot more divers than the caver. The cave instructor probably didn't want to loose the business, if he didn't teach him somebody else would. The certifying agencies have minimal (Adv.OW, about six dives) entry requirements. Not a good situation for the sport. Most people spread out their courses over months or years for various reasons (experience and money are two). Some people, OTOH, blast through in a couple of weeks (got the money, can't wait to dive). This situation probably occures more than it should. The agencies and individual instructors will have to address this problem. Unfortunately they probably won't. Just hope for the best for the new caver and his buddies.
