I guess the same as for any other penetration dive! It depends on the
experience of the operator; length of line; line construction and material;
method of tying off; etc., etc..

I've listened to the argument for memorising and learning the layout of a
wreck and, by that means, dispensing with the need for lines. It seems to
me that that's somewhat akin to being blindfolded in your own lounge room,
being spun around several times, and then asked to find the door! (Rather
like a silt out!). You may find the door! You most likely will not! In
zero visibility a properly deployed line is a definite asset.

Last Friday, 10th Jan., a woman died while carrying out a penetration dive
into one of Victoria, Australia's, sunken submarines. In late '96, two
(experienced!) divers died while carrying out a penetration dive on the
"President Coolidge' in Vanuatu. Apparently they became disoriented in a
silt out.

I don't know! But perhaps the use of a properly deployed line would have
saved these people?

It seems to me that you take what's available and learn to use it PROPERLY.
(I stress properly, because, in my limited experience, very few divers know
how to handle, deploy, tie or splice either synthetic, or natural fibre,
rope or cordage.)
