Speaing of horrendous configs: Here's one we've seen lately. A certain 'diver' using a diverite back plate felt that the plate could be attached to his doubles bolts via a plastic with brass insert nut. Sounds good on the surface; easier to put on, lower profile, probably cheaper than stainless, who knows. Well, over time the plastic fatigued and both nuts crapped out during a deep, cold, darkwater lake dive. This caused his overfilled 95's to seperate from his backplate and harness! At this point with manifold in hand he attempts to drag his doubles up the line to the boat - one hand at time up the rope. The pull on his primary hose (not long) was straining his neck, and the look was certainly approaching panic. If his buddy had not been close to rescue him this could have progressed into a much more serious situation. A couple of points can be inferrred: 1. Dont use these plastic jobs to secure your tanks. Use regular stainless nuts or wingnuts (both with a washer) to spread the load and ensure that things stay together. 2. Be aware that even the small things can go wrong can: at best ruin your dive, or at worst get your buddy hurt! As a side note this 'diver' had been warned that this could occur just a short period before this happened...think he's listening now? Probably not. But you can bet he made a trip to the hardware store for some stainless nuts. Don't be paranoid, but take advice from those who have been there. Yes; I'm still learning too. I once used a swivel on my regulator that was a mistake!
