FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE..................................................... ATTENTION DIVERS & NON-DIVERS MARQUETTE UNDERWATER PRESERVE HOLDS THIRD ANNUAL HENRY B. SMITH MEMORIAL DIVER'S WEEKEND AUGUST 15-17, 1997 In an effort to enhance awareness of the MARQUETTE UNDERWATER PRESERVE, Diver Down Scuba of Marquette is holding the third annual diver's weekend as a memorial to the 565 foot ore carrier HENRY B. SMITH, which disappeared on Lake Superior on November 9, 1913. At 5:00 p.m. that fateful evening, a fierce northwest gale was blowing when the Henry B. Smith left Marquette's Presque Isle Harbor down bound with a full cargo of 11,000 tons of iron ore. The Smith reportedly steamed directly east into the Lake for 20 minutes and then turned north towards Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. She was never seen again. The search for the Henry B. Smith is ongoing. However, the memorial diver's weekend, held August 15-17, will serve as a commemoration for the 24 souls who perished in the mysterious shipwreck. A full itinerary of events will begin Friday evening, with a reception featuring a Great Lakes maritime history presentation (speaker to be announced). On Saturday, a diver's treasure hunt will take place at Presque Isle Park, along the city of Marquette's beautiful Lake Superior shoreline. Following the treasure hunt there will be a picnic and awards ceremony, featuring hot dogs, brats, soft drinks at Picnic Rocks Park along Lakeshore Boulevard. Prizes from the treasure hunt will be awarded at the picnic. All activities are open to both the diving and non-diving public. On Sunday, a harbor clean up dive will take place as divers raise old bikes, tires, and other trash from the bottom of Lake Superior's historic Marquette Bay. This PADI Project Aware event will also feature door prizes. The Marquette Underwater Preserve was established in 1990. The preserve is divided into two areas: the Huron Island unit, located north of Big Bay, and the Marquette unit, located directly off the coast of the City of Marquette. The Preserve contains eight known shipwrecks, plus several others yet to be discovered.
