July 28th, 1996 after driving some _five_ hours we're the first boat on scene with incredible 70' vis. (on Aug 21, 1995 vis was 1') Dropping down I see something almost glowing on the bottom. I drop down past the deck into the hold and there are PLATES!, BIG plates! SMALL plates! plates everywhere! Since these were out in the open my original thought was that some one had penetrated gotten the plates and then been forced to drop some. No sooner do I grab the biggest plate than I notice a hissing thats getting louder and louder. I'm freeflowing! Tried to carry the plate and start my ascent, but decided to drop the plate, started gesturing franticly to my buddy to grab some plates, began my ascent, and switched over to my pony. My buddy brought up the _smallest_ plate they could find. We all got a good laugh when we realized the plate was dated several years _after_ the Chester Poling went down. I've still got the plate; its my first piece of 'treasure'. Since it was so obviously a fake I didn't mind at all; not sure how I'd feel about bringing up a forgery from the U853. I can't see myself taking it as humorously. -- Sam Abbe home:abbe@sn*.ne*, work:sabbe@si*.co*, http://www.red.org/sam Capt. - T.A.C.
