Subject: Brass vs. SS piston clips / bolt snaps
My experience is that the brass snaps are prone to "sticking" unless you keep
the piston greased with silicone. I think as the brass becomes tarnished due
to oxidisation, its this thin layer that sticks (I'm no metallurgist though).
After a while they need greasing again and therefore this adds to the
maintenance/preperations prior to a dive. The Stainless Steel ones dont seem
to have this problem. The ones I use are not actually SS, but have some sort
of chrome plating, however they dont rust or stick. Got them from a hardware
store, nothing special about them. Oh except they're cheaper pro rata because
they're not sold as diving equipment. :)

Lawrence(UK).

Subject: re: Re: Wreck gear rigging

We call them bolt snaps up here in Alaska, not to be confused with *boat*
clips which are what you call "widow-makers". I've got them on all my gear
but they can be a real pain in winter. If the air temperature is sufficiently

cold, they will freeze solid on you the instant you exit the water and you
won't get them open again until you get your rig home and run it under hot
water. Kind of a bother on shore dives when you have a hike.

Also, I've heard various times on the lists that stainless bolt snaps are
preferred to brass. I have both and I can't detect any real difference.
Looks like they use the identical spring inside. Anyone know why the
stainless are supposed to be better?
