I posted this to rec.scuba recently, and I'll make the same bet here. I don't like all the hype the Force Fins have gotten, and the mis-information that they are a "good" fin for everyone. What I want to demonstrate is that they only are good for people who either like to swim slow (i.e., macro photographers) or have to swim slow (the physically unfit who cramp easily or have heart conditions, etc.) The bet is this: Any Force Fin wearing diver is challenged to attempt to just "keep up" with Jim Abernethy and me (we will be wearing the A.B. Biller free diving fins) for a single dive at our normal spearfishing pace. If you use Force Fins and are successful in keeping up with us throughout the dive, you will win your bet with us and dive free for 3 days on Jim's boat Deep Obsession, and get three hotel nights for free at either the Rutledge Inn or the Days Inn. So far after 4 days on rec.scuba, none of the people who like to brag about how "efficient" Force Fins are have accepted, and few have made any "peep" at all. I'd like to add this is not an ego bet---the big reason Jim and I will always win this bet is that Force Fins don't give you any real speed capability---thats our opinion, and thats what we will try to demonstrate. The speed record set with Force Fins was an unrealistic distance --20 or 40 km...We are concerned with speed over distances most divers are going to be covering....somewhere between one mile and three miles would seem to be plenty for any recreational or technical purpose. If I decide I want to swim from Miami to Cuba, maybe I'll use Force Fins. Dan Dan Volker SOUTH FLORIDA DIVE JOURNAL http://www.florida.net/scuba/dive 407-683-3592
