Rick, Most (not all) diver will use a "guide line" if there is any possibility of bad visibility becoming a problem. Plus, guide lines are used if there are many dead end, hallways or corridors in the wreck. Progressive penetration works well on small to medium size wrecks with no possibility of bad visibility or (some) large wrecks where no possibility of bad visibility and many access ways to open water. The biggest problem with progressive penetration or any wreck penetration where no guide line is used is DIVERS FORGET. Thatis the diver may have other things (come up) on his mind, eg., today is my daughter's birthday and I'll have to remember to buy her a gift on the way home from the dive...etc. Now the diver has placed something else in memory (his brain) other then where he is in the wreck and how to get out. If there is a diving emergency this diver could find hemself thinking more aboutseeing his daugther, then saving his or his buddies life. Guide lines or no guide line the choice is yours, but choose the one that will be the safest for you. For most (not all) wreck divers it's to use the g-line. REMEMBER!! It's better to have (use) a line and not need it, then, need a line and not have (use) it. Gary McGee Detroit, MI USA Great Lakes Wrecker
