In most cases, the gas mixture was a constant PO2 of 1.4bar/ata, a constant PN2 of ~4bar/ata, and the balance helium. The voice is Donald Duck, but not unintelligible. Neon would mitigate the effect somewhat (I was recently speaking with someone who had done test dives to 750 feet with neox and said that voice distortion was not nearly as bad as it would have been on heliox), but you're still gonna sound silly. In fact, you'd sound silly on air too. The problem with Neon is that nobody has any real reliable numbers for decompression calculations. You could probably guess it for short duration dives, but I wouldn't chance it. If I were you, I'd go with a shallow EAD trimix, and electronically "descramble" the voice in a lab. Better yet, do a voice-over in shallow water. Aloha, Rich
