By not looking at your gauge, there is less apprehension, and you tend to not be concerned with making it to a specific depth so to say.(for example, you hit 180 and decide thats not deep enough so you decide to go to 200, get there, then decide you want to go to 225). Also, you can concentrate on how you feel as opposed to how deep you are. When you feel like you are beyond the ability to help another diver, then you have past your "comfort zone".
