Subject: Bill Gleason and Nitrox
My how times change. In this months issue of Skin Diver (George and I are
the only subscribers) Bill Gleason (editor) has embraced Nitrox. If you
are unaware of the controversy, Skin Diver, several years ago, distanced
itself from Nitrox ("Snake Oil") i.e. would not mention the word "nitrox"
or accept any advertising from agencies promoting the use of nitrox.
What is skindiver? Oh yeah its that travel magazine!
It seems the editorial staff of Skin Diver now believe the "nitrox
community" has gotten its act together (Gleason compares the improvement
to the safety push by the cave diving community over the last couple of
decades.)
Do any of their staff actually scuba dive? Better question, did they
do a openwater w-end course since last issue? If the conditions
aren't pool like it aint diving Skindiver?
Well, since PADI is entering the nitrox arena, I guess Skin diver had no
choice.
Your implication is that Skindiver is changing its editorial view of
Nitrox due to PADI just couldnt be right, It seems so unlikely that
very many of its readers are PADI certified! And we all know that if
PADI says its OK then of course its OK. I wonder how exactly the
nitrox community got it right, enough people are now certified nitrox
that its worthwhile for Skindiver to publish articles about nitrox in
the hope that they will buy their magazine?
I guess we can all be gratefull that Mr. Gleason has now given us
royal asent, now the divers will be flooding in the door of your
local nitrox shop to get certified so they can wear a pretty yellow
and green decal on their tank nextime they dive stingray city! Joy... -
