Oooo!!  I LIKE that!  Very well said! It took me a year and a half to go
from an experienced air diver to a weenie trimix diver (which the courses
can do in a couple of weeks).  Also, believe it or not, the "formal"
training programs probably cost less money, depending on what kind of
access you have to the experienced people offering advice.  As I've said
before, I have a garage full of "expensive mistakes", and several shelves
of diving physiology books that probably cost me close to $2K, all told.

I believe the quality of education is higher if you do it the slow way, 
but *only* if you have the right discipline and enough patience not to let 
your confidence get ahead of you.

I had to read that several times to get it right, but it was worth it.
