Just a little news, Lamar Hires swam to the hienkle last night in a set
of 104's in 35 minutes by taking the Roller cCoaster short cut. This
was quicker than the previosu fastest time by Jim Lockwood in 36
minutes and 36 seconds except Jim took no short cuts. AND guess what
Lamar was wearing a transpac, butt mounted light with twist head and
Apollo, plastic fins. The total dive time was 60 minutes and the entire
dive was completed without switching to the stage bottle and 1,000 psig
was left over. Starting pressure was 3200.

Yes, Mount also has a transpac in addition to his backplate, he bought
it after talking to Harry (another seasoned cavediver with the typical
divers back), who reported it placed less stress on his back than a
backplate. Thus I decided to try try it, at first for for my backs sake
and wound up liking it.
The transpac has had the following modifications done to it:
1. the adjustment tabs cut so there are no dangling peices
2. the chest strap has been removed
3. D rings were placed on the waist strap.
4. The double tank wrap bands were replaced with the metal plates for
attaching to the tanks just like the backplate,
5.my shoulder rings happen to be in the exact right place for me so I
made no adjustments to them
6. For open water and wreck diving I placed gromlets at the base of the
transpac and carry my lift bag there
7. I have surgical tubing loops on the circular rings just inside the
pac where I stow my long hose. (I breath from both the long and short
hose on each dive, to insure my regs are at 100% all the time)
8. I have (removable)surgical loops on the left side where I store my
argon bottle when diving dry.

My back plate is set up quite siimilarly to the transpac

the system now has a low drag profile, fits snug, carries stages with
absobulutely no shifting and is more comfortable on my lowere back
exiting the water than my backplate. I still switch back and forth but
really love the comfort of the transpac especially due to the lessened
stress on my lower back. Comfort is an importantpart of configuration.

I'm not saying it is better or worse than my backplate it is more
comfortable and now it is just as streamlined, it is stable it is
definetly safe and a system I enjoy using and think is as good as any
other sytem a diver may elect to get. I know this may produce sounds of
outrage from some on the list. However good is good, right is right,
safe is safe and the ability to make ones own mind up is a right we all
have. Rweaders use your own mind on equipment just be certain it is
safe. it is comfortable, it is user friendly , it is simple and
stramlined.

If some of you again wish to flame me have a ball it does not change
the facts of life.

If I dive with a team that configures differently I adopt my system to
theirs while diving with them.

I think both those things I referenced above and Hogarth are safe, low
drag and proven systems. Just be clean in your configuration.

Some folks murder either application in their version of these systems.

A big point all readers on the list should be aware of by now is
nothing comes out of the box ideally suited for tek diving or someones
personal desires. To make a system ideal for you, spend time to
customize it. On the other hand they are functional(backplates and
transpacks)out of the box.

that is my input for the week no debates: flame me if you wish, to
all Remember always be an individual and always THINK
