What sort of horror stories? How much of this is likely to come from someone
spraining the manifold connections by hauling the assembled aqualung (or even
the whole diver, e.g. when helping him out of the water into an inflatable)
about by using the manifold as a handle? In the old days when regulators were
big round things on the top of the cylinder(s), there was a special training
instruction "don't pick up an assembled aqualung by the regulator".
