I see that Rod is more careful about this than I am.  Yes, I clean the 
whole loop about once a month (with betadine).  When I do, there is an 
obvious slime layer - a bacterial mat.  I've never gotten sick, or had a 
sore throat, or tasted anything weird; but nonetheless, I'm sure most 
people wouldn't be especially warm & fuzzy with the idea of sucking air 
past a massive bacteria colony.  Rod's way of doing things is probably 
better than mine.
