It's also a good way to keep the airway open (reduce probability of AGE), and allows for increasing bouyancy (no exhaled gas) to get you to the surface quicker. It's certainly not an ideal solution for many reasons (CO2 buildup, shallow water blackout, etc.), but when there's no other choice, it can get help you to the surface alive. Aloha, Rich
