  My guess would be that the device would be a chamber with 1 way valves to
let water in as the exhaled bubbles make their way to the surface. What was
the diameter of the "exhaust" pipe/hose to the surface? I suppose if the
pipe/hose is wide enough, there should be no venturi effect.
