>heard rif a few years ago about studies from china saying that heliox >(with out nitrogen) caused the blood cells to become ridged thus >damaging the smaller capillaries in the brain.. any insight on this Thanks for that. Its something else I'll watch for in the literature. The only work on helium and erythrocytes I am presently aware of is by the Russians. Buravkova and his team (1992) monitored divers during a 15 day saturation dive to 100 metres (330 feet I think). They found the erythrocyte membrane didn't pump ions properly. I don't have the actual manuscript so I can't say how soon this happened. Another Russian Group (Miliutina et al 1992) found that prolonged helium-oxygen hyperbaric (pressure 3,6 MPa) variously stuffed up the erythrocyte membrane, in particular increasing bilayer microviscosity mainly due to increased accumulation of cholesterol in the membrane. I don't have this actual manuscript either so I can't say how quickly this happend. (A low cholesterol diet won't help either, becasue your body can make the stuff.) I suspect deep diving is a bit like hitting the booze. It's going to some damage but you've got to look at the tradeoffs.
