Ones diving ability revolves around several factors, all of which need to be taken into account on every dive. The amount of dives ones has is only relevent to the conditions those dives were made in. A diver who has 200 dives in north carolina would be a better diver (my opinion), all things of course being equal, if he had made those same 200 dives here in the northeastern waters. I agree that that amount of dives a diver has does not indicate how good or bad a diver is. I know divers that have hundreds of dives, but you wont catch them diving here in NY waters period. And good for them, they realize that they do not have the experience for our waters-they trravel to warmer, clearer waters. And similarily, a good wreck diver here in NY with hundreds of dives, lets say to 200 feet, would be an accident waiting to happen in a cave environment withour both training and experience. Experience. Just because one took a course does not mean he is a good diver trained at that level. What if the course was no good, filled with poor information, lack of skills during the dive portion of the course? A good diver will have both education and experience, but that experience does not necessarily carry over into conditions he was not trained in. The amount of dives an individual has is almost irrelevent. Experience and attitude, education and practice, makes a good diver. Just another point of view. Safe Diving, Raimo.
