In my opinion: no, you are not being too conservative. My biggest gripe
with the "130 limit" espoused by the "leaders" of the recreational diving
community has nothing to do with the fact that I think deeper dives can
be made within adequate margins of safety, it has to do with the converse
implication that dives to depths of less than 130 feet are inherently
"safe" for recreational divers. This is total nonsense. As soon as you
get deeper than what you could ascend from on a single breath of air -
which for me is about 50 feet (when you add in the over-compensatory
exhalation I, and most other divers, do to avoid AGE), then depth per
se becomes almost irrelevent - they all carry increased risk.

I have no doubt that many individuals with fewer than "a couple hundred
dives" are capable of managing problems at 120 feet. But I'm not sure how
one would find out if he or she is among those individuals without
enduring a potentially life-threatening situation. Therefore, I'd prefer
to recommend to all new divers that they do "a couple hundred" dives
before getting much below 60-80 feet - if for no other reason than to
enhance their abilities to stay calm underwater (due to increased general
familiarity with the environment, and self-confidence). For what its
worth, my first several hundred dives were at depths of 70 feet or less.

Just my opinions.

Rich
