Well, the cave diving list is back. ~ For those divers outside the US who have not much direct experience with American culture, and w ho might find the depth and duration of the current, very personal flame wars to be mystifying (as in: who cares?), please allow me to clarify. Here in the US, among participants in *every* field of endeavor, we have a long a nd valued tradition of torquing down on each othere's nuts whenever possible. We didn't make this sport up and are not the only practicioners -- but we do like to max it. Some argue that this results in a great waste of time and effort. Others argue that, although it may be true that much is wasted, such contentious and aggressive personality traits are what move Americans to achieve what we have -- both the positive and negative stuff. Foremost, of what we have achieved, is our extremely difficult, hazardous, and precious, attempt at true democracy -- one which persists until even today. And crucial to our concept of democracy is freedom of speech, which manifests itself very clearly in our converstions on these net lists -- even when it extends to someone's dredging up the dead, if it serves his purpose. Please bear with us. Perhaps down the road, given enough time, we will develop a sense of value for having class and good taste as well. Until then, you can be sure that someone, right now, is adjusting the wrench and looking for a better purchase. Christopher A.
