Subject: Being Nice

I have just returned from Florida with a new cave diver, who by all
appearances is competant beyond his years in the water. BUT it also made me
see that maybe a little to confident. Lack of experience, especially bad, can
deceive one into believing that either it will not happen or it will be easy
to handle. All I can say (but how to communicate?) is NOT ALWAYS SO!! Real
life threats rarely are as easy to deal with as your training. You will
hopefully get through, if you do have the experience and training, but some
do not. Till it happens, most do not undertand what kind of stress it puts
you under!
You were very correct when you stated in so many words, that we often dive
limits we perceive we can handle easily, but we are deceived by our egos. It
can be a lot more dangerous that we beleive. Especially if we have had many
un-eventful dives. We must be forever training to be constantly improving,
extending are limits slowly. It has been said before, that training and tools
available to divers today can quickly get them farther and deeper with less
experience and less chance of failure. But not NO FAILURE! Then, experience
can very well make the difference between controlling panic and having a
solution to the problem (they don't always mirror the sample problems you
practiced in class) or loosing it and/or taking just a little to long to
solve it. A few seconds may be all it tales.

Thanks for your input. People with your experience pointing out the dangers
tells those who THINK they know it all. Maybe there the ones inreal danger,
since they don't even realize the problem.

Safe Diving;
Jonathan
