I don't have the photo in front of me now, but I seem to recall that he is 
carrying some type of flares.  

I carry a big safety sausage and a loud whistle when I do open water drift 
dives, and both have been very useful when surfacing in heavy swells.  Flares 
would be a great thing to carry, or smoke bombs. "SKYBLASTER" makes water proof 
mini flares for boaters that are small, bright and safe.  I'm sure that they are
not pressure proof, though.  Anyone have info on a smoke bomb or flare that is 
suitable for diving?
