That is because some people have such tunnel vision that they don't
understand risk/value tradeoffs.
There is a slight risk that the fastener will fail. The highest risk is on
land where the loads are much greater than when in the water.
I personally dive with a shoulder release on my 2x121's. I have had one
"failure", on land when I stood up, because I failed to properly seat the
fastener. Guess what happened. The kit shifted just a little while I took
the majority of the weight on the other strap. I have tried intentionally
unfastening the shoulder underwater. The result is that everything is a bit
looser than I like, but it still stayed in place.
On the other hand, I guarantee that I can get out of my gear easier,
quicker, and in tighter quarters because I have the release.

For me the decision is easy. I put the failure in the same class with the
failed fin strap. (I have spares in the trailer.)

But then you and I agree on some other things, so in the eyes of some, our
opinions, observations, and analysis are to be ignored.
