Mark,

The third type of oxygen sensor is a polargraphic sensor.  As you
stated, it is much more labor intensive (replacing the membrane and
the electrolyte), and requires this service much more frequently than
the galvanic fuel cell units (with the more frequent service, it is 
actually significantly more expensive per year of use than the fuel
cell units).  I have used all three, and agree that the paramagnetic
units are bulletproof, but much more expensive, and I am not sure if
the paramagnetic units measure FiO2 or partial pressure of oxygen (the
galvanic fuel cell units measure directly in partial pressures, and the
electronics convert this into a percent reading on the unit.

Thus, for rebreathers, the fuel cells are much more simple and direct
for controlling partial pressures of oxygen in the "loop".
