Folks,

I am, once again, concerned about the uncivil nature of postings on my
mailing list.  What I have to say is very simple:

I will not tolerate the use of my resources in any way that is generally
considered offensive, abusive, threatening, or insulting.

I don't have ether the time or the interest to act as a police officer
for standards on the list.  I'm sorry.  I offer you all my CPU and disk
resources, and a proportion of my T1 lines to the Internet.  I cannot
also offer time to police things.

There are two individuals who repeatedly send what many of the other
readers view as unacceptable postings.  I think we all know who those
two are.  There are several other folk who are less persistent offenders.

I suggest that everyone on this list who has recently received offensive
postings consider sending email to the individuals in question, and to
the Network Managers of the access services that those individuals use
(send to "postmaster@...").  There are laws that cover public speaking
and what language is acceptable, and public Internet mailing lists are
not excepted from those rules.  Most Network Managers take this sort of
thing very seriously.

I'll be honest with you all.  I am taking this very seriously, myself.
With my lack of time to police things, if things do not improve really
quickly, I will simply take unilateral action and shut the list down.  I
really don't want to do that, but I will do if things do not return to a
level of zero complaints.  I am sorry, but I am not making my resources
available so that they can be persistently abuse like this.

There are other alternatives.  Kick off the offensive individuals.
Given the highly divided response to my actions a few weeks ago, it is
not clear if kicking folk off is what is wanted.  If you all want that,
I think you'll need a vote, and I don't have the time to organize that
for you.  Or, make the list moderated.  Or, install a filter that
restricts the offenders to a limited number of postings per day.
Whatever.  You all, decide what to do, and do it quickly.  I will respond
to a clear mandate from the list.  But, seriously, I am poised to pull
the plug if things don't improve.

PS: To the many of you who sent me email following my actions two
or three weeks ago: I am sorry that in many cases I have not had time
to reply personally.  I appreciate all the many comments of support,
both about my actions at that time, and about maintaining the list,
in general.  Thank you for your support.

PPS: DON'T ALL go sending me email about this message too.  I just
don't have the time to reply to all.  If a coordinated response is
needed, someone else will have to take charge or organizing that, and
just send me the results.
