Subject: Pony Bottles vs Deco Bottles
To: Jeff Kell <JEFF@UT*.UT*.ED*>

Wait a minute guys! Are we forgetting something?
Pony bottles were from the days of single tanks and/or
single outlet manifolds. There is no need for ponies with
a dual outlet manifold. A deco bottle should be carried
where it can be 1) looked at and identified, 2) turned
on and off, and 3) removed if snagged.
It is true that the pony-sixed bottles, like the
aluminum 30's and 40's are ideal for deco gas, as two
can easily be carried on one side without a lot of
drag or buoyancy alteration, or even three for a super
deep dive, but the practice of carrying a pony in
a containment device or behind the diver is patently
dangerous, and is merely a vestigal reminder of past
inadequacy. The cncept of carrying a pony as part of
the main gas supply is like carrying a jerry can of
gasoline on the frontseat of your car.
This is a good reason for wreck divers to take
cave-diving courses - to get rid of their vesitigal
equipment. - George Irvine
