IME of J-valves (I used some on some of those shitty al80 in Thailand this spring) three things could occur. Either on reaching the reserve the reg would tighten (this never actually happened); or the reg would breathe normally but the HP needle would deflect; or there would be no effect at all (50/50 the last two effects). The reg was a Poseidon Jetstream. In the end we just opened them when filling and left them that way, used them just as supply tanks for the air lift or I tried to shunt them to the BFH. Horrid things. Rather like double declutching. But then, we also had three tanks that leaked (badly) between pillar valve and tank, and one which could have it's pillar valve removed when there was 15bar in the tank. Smelly wetsuit time. Jason.
