GASDIVER@ao*.co* sez: > I worked for Ed Betts for three years and I'll tell you right now he teaches > 1.6 ATA is fine for a swimming dive and tthat it's "ok" to pack a 50/50 > bottle for bailout from 130 FSW. This guy's teaching practices are scarier > than anything Tom Mount EVER came up with! Boy is that an understatement. Betts doesn't even understand basic math -- he made several comments during the course which showed he did not properly reason out various bits of math. I especially enjoyed the hand-waving which went along with the O2 CNS tox subject... Not to mention that Betts has been an active promoter of Nitrox for the masses to 130 fsw (NOAA I)-- and he really hates it when you mention that it does not make sense to trade a more severe risk for a less severe one (O2 tox in place of DCS). And he worships the Navy tables. And Island Scuba has put many a newly-certified diver into double 100's with a pony of 50/50 for bailout/deco. (You should see these people on the boat: you can always tell them by the completly unscratched equipment! -- But hey, they have the checkbook (oops, I mean qualifications) to dive the Bass...) There are lots of inconsistencies in the ANDI "manual", too. -frank -- fhd@in*.ne* | If you are skating on thin ice, you might as well dance. 1 212 559 5534 | 1 917 992 2248 | 1 718 746 7061 |
