A common technique in the UK is as follows:-

We use a shot weight (ie cylinder top that has failed hydo/visual test - filled
with lead - the idea is a small hydronamicaly shaped weight that drops quickly
without much sidways movement/flutter). As Curt says dropped up tide/wind of
the wreck and then drift back. First divers down the Line then tie off a
sacrafical waster to the wreck from the line, and then often air bag the shot
back up (makes it easy at the end of the dive !). All divers can now use the
line down as a guide - any one really pulling down (bad practice) may snap the
scarafical waster and then ruin the dive for the rest.

Deco station is carabined to the line for the returning deco, some mark off
system for divers down/up (slate or name tags on clips) is used to ensure the
last divers, can cut the station away for drifting deco - also a team agreed
cut free time such that if a team is late back to the station it can be cut
free and the late team will send up delayed bags and also drift. The covering
RIB now recovers the down line by snapping the scarifical waster and then
follows the station. We often run multiple RIBS so that we can follow, assist
as required.

Works for UK waters, and for RIB diving may not work everywhere
