Subject: "Popper" use (was Re: Wreck Anchor Help)
No, not that stuff they use in the disco to make their date more attractive.

We use this idea -- sending up a plastic disposable soda bottle tied to
the object of interest -- on occasion in a local lake for underwater mapping.
On a calm day, with a surveyor's transit on the shore, you can
locate stuff with such precision that divemasters are not needed.

However, we hide the maps we make this way from divemasters in training.
Makes it too easy for them to cheat on the mapping requirement.

We also use the pop bottle on a string for underwater cleanups. Take a
drawstring
trashbag to depth, fill it, tie off the pop bottle, and send the bottle up
to the surface support team, who hauls it in. Yeah, there's always somebody
who "pops" a sumberged tree or 50-lb. boulder as a prank.
