Just guessing, but wouldn't it be most likely a wall thickness test?

That is the simplest of the ultrasonic tests, and the most common.
The sound is sent through the wall, and the time to the return echo
measured, giving the thickness.  We have one at work, and I've used
U/W versions to check pipelines and such as well.
