I assume it is a method of >detecting imperfections in the tank, but how? HI ! Ultrasonic tests are used to check for internals brake lines in side the object's material. It uses high frequency sound waves that pass through the material and received by a receiver on the other side of the object. On the instrument's screen the operator can see any brake lines or cracks in side the material. In that way you can detect cracks that are not visible because they are too small or because they did not brake the object's surface, yet. The ultrasonic system is also used to check under water pips, ships, bridges, air planes wings AND babies (babies have a little different system but the same idea). Israeli dive industry, navy and recreational systems require equipment ultrasonic and hyperbaric and sometimes x-ray tests every 3 to 5 years depending on the working pressure and tank stile.
