Frank, Thanks for the input. > There's nothing unethical about any of these; the subscription info and archive > info is readily available from many places (including the list-of-lists). That's pretty much my perspective as well. As long as the person who originally said it is credited, and as long as the meaning of the message isn't too twisted, I'm not sure I understand how quoting in this way is different from one published book/article quoting the words of another author from another published book/article (happens all the time - that's what bibliographies are for). > The letters section of the recent A/C section did not distinguish between letters > to the editor, posts to techdiver, posts to CompuServe (the Scuba forum), and > posts to who-knows-where else. I don't think this is right, but OTOH, it is not > the most major travesty of justice in history...I'm just glad that A/C seems to > be changing for the better... I DEFINITELY agree with the last sentence. I hammered away very hard on Mike after "Hard" and "Wreckers" to return to the roots and make the mag more like it used to be. I know a lot of others did the same. Although I haven't yet seen the new issue, I'm glad to hear it's looking better. As for citing the source as well as the author, I'm not sure where my ethical stance is, but I think it's a good idea - as someone else pointed out, it should be done the way Newsweek does it. Although I still like this thread because it is intellectually stimulating, it's sort of moot as far as A/C goes. Mike already knows about the problem, acknowledges that he should have contacted authors first, and indicated he will context before publication in the future. Aloha, Rich
