Valid point - considering that the author is taking parts of the
conversation
out of context and editing it down. So if Gilliam did come across different
in
person, we wouldn't know... But the original comment was not that
Gilliam was 'glorifying' record setting. Part of the issue was with
referring to
the surviving record setters as a 'small fraternity'. Gilliam did mention
that
he recommends a max PO2 of 1.6 ata's, and he did imply that the reason
he survived these dives was due to his physiology. The point is this: the
next time we are all debating why a 'fool' attempts a deep air record, we
should consider that maybe, just maybe, its because he wants to become
a hero and join that 'small fraternity'. Even though he may join a slightly
larger frat of dead guys.
(and if anybody else get miffed just because I questioning your idol,
tuff....
get a grip.... he's only human...email someone who cares....)
It is interesting that way back in my NAUI Advanced/Master diver class,
before I started talking IANTD classes, I learned that the number one cause
of diver accidents is diver ego. leave it to NAUI to hit the basics...maybe
some of the tech agencies should go over that one a little more.
And granted, most of the responsibility for how this interview comes across
is the authors. Is very possible that the author should have been better
informed.
A good example of this was in the article on Pipin's dive. This author
states
that Pipin "holds his nose to keep water from flooding his sinuses", (even
though the picture on the page shows Pipin wearing a nose clip) and "clears
his ears constantly to combat the rising pressure" Clears them with what?
The
author didn't know either (ya, I got the post about using salt water, can't
*even*
imagine that...) But the place the author really shows how clueless he is,
is when
he states that at 417ft Pipin is "drugged by nitrogen narcosis equivalent to
half
a case of beer" (technical measurement I'm sure....I guess that would be
aprox.
one beer per atm?). Of course, since we are talking about *free* diving,
Pipin
doesn't have much more nitrogen in his blood then he did at the
surface....so
how did he get so nark'd? maybe he EQ'd his ears with that beer.....

Later,
Scott
