A couple of comments in response to a posting about an interview with Gilliam. The poster said Gilliam was glorifying diving on deep air. I do not know Gilliam very well, but I do know he's not on the Net, so he can't comment. But here's my take on the situation. I believe he thinks most/perhaps all the weenies going for the record are crazy...by the way, weenies is my term, crazy is his. When the most recent incident took place in Florida...you remember the one that sparked all the interest here in this list...I spoke with him on the following Monday and I seem to recall he was dismayed that someone would attempt such a thing without a great deal of preparation, and he mentioned that "a whole bunch of us tried to tell him he was stupid to try it." I have not read the article, but as an ex-magazine editor I can tell you that what you say during an interview often takes on a very different tone once it's committed to the printed page...and that's if it's actually written down accurately! I admit to liking Gilliam, I think he's a decent guy who tried something crazy and lived to talk about it. And I know he is intellegent enough to realize the particular physiological peculiarity that allowed him to walk away from that dive is a freak of nature....I just can't see him glorifying diving deep on air....and I know that sounds bizzare...but that's my opinion. Now I gotta go and get a copy of the magazine to see how far I just stuck my neck out. And I guess I should admit some conflict here...I'm a TDI instructor by choice!
