If a tank completely floods, you can lose a lot of bouyancy, can be quite serious if the bottom is far below. If a tank O-ring or burst disk goes, there's not much you can do about it, at least with independents you only flood one tank. The valve should always be turned off in case of failure, will help tell you what the problem is, and may "save your butt". Maybe I should make a sig. file ala.
