"Cochran is pleased to announce an agreement between Cochran Undersea Technology and PRISM Life Support Systems Limited that will herald a new era in recreational diving. The PRISM represents a breakthrough in modular, safe, low-maintenance rebreather technology, making it superbly suited for recreational diving. Cochran will add its manufacturing and distribution expertise as well as its computer technology to the equation." Cave and technical divers attending the National Speleological Society Cave Diving Section Workshop were the first to hear the news of the agreement. Perez, scuba products manager for the Richardson, Texas based dive instrument manufacturer, concluded a presentation on the "History and Future of Dive Instrument Science..." with a discussion of future technologies. In addition to previewing a new heads-up display design for the company's Nemesis line of hoseless dive computers, Mr. Perez surprised the audience further by announcing that Cochran will launch a campaign to bring the PRISM rebreather to market in the immediate future. Specialized training will be required to use the PRISM. "Training is a key element in the acceptance and safe use of rebreather technology by sport divers. We have been working behind the scenes for some time to put all of the pieces in place," said Perez. "We've inked an agreement with a major recreational dive training agency to handle PRISM certification. Due to the PRISM's use of enriched air, this training program will include both Nitrox and PRISM specialty certifications. The agency will formally announce the details of the program in July." Designed by respected rebreather expert Peter Readey, the PRISM is a modular system that can be configured to support closed circuit, semi-closed circuit and open circuit scuba operation. First versions will be mechanical and limited to depths of approximately 40 meters. They will be bundled with Nemesis II Nitrox dive computers and will feature open circuit emergency backup. Versions certified for deeper depths and fitted with customized Cochran computer controls are anticipated. "Rebreathers have been around for more than one hundred years. A major failing of previous designs is the tendency to deliver a 'caustic cocktail' to the diver when the scrubber is exposed to water. The PRISM is the first water-tolerant design... the key factor in making a rebreather truly suitable for use by recreational divers," according to PRISM's Darrell Todd. "We're very pleased to join the Cochran team in bringing this exciting technology to the recreational diving community." Under the agreement, PRISM Life Support Systems Ltd. will relocate from London to the Cochran offices in Richardson, Texas. The PRISM will be available later this year from Team Cochran dealers worldwide.
