Mike, There are a number of diving operations in the Norfolk/ Va beach area I will be brief ( well I tried, but I wanted to be thorough, sorry its so long) and try not to be biased since I own one of the operations and one of the boats. I will add some specifics but would suggest that you visit them all to get an overview of what they have to offer since they cater to a different clientele: Chesapeake Bay Diving center, in Portsmouth, 397-0422, SSI instruction, catering to the new diver and a front/ loss leader for a commercial diving company. the Owners wife runs the store while the husband runs the commercial side of the house. they do not do tech diving. sell us diver equipment (804) 397-0422 Divers Unlimited - new store at the intersection of Granby and Ocean View rds. you will get to know these roads very well when you get here. Cater to new diver sells dacor equipment unfortunately I do not have a telephone number they are not in the yellow pages. Mid Atlantic dive center caters to new diver does not do tech diving, PADI 5 star, sells US diver located on Indian River road in Va Beach (804) 420-6179 Aqua Safaris - Pembroke area of Va beach (804) 473-0847, Runs a dive boat in Hatteras NC, nice shop with pool, owners are very young - mid 20's they do nitrox fills and TDI nitrox instruction. TDI instructor is Clarence Osborn, I certified Clarence as a IANTD tech nitrox diver in July 94 received TDI instructor rating at DEMA 95 in California Also offers NAUI and PADI instruction Lynnhaven Dive center - (804) 481-7949 an This store does nitrox fills and run 2 boats, Miss Lindsley and Cindy loo. Boats take 20-30 divers. Offers SSI nitrox instruction. Sells scuba pro and oceanic equipment. WRECK-TEK, Inc - (804) 552-1656 - Located at the resort Ocean Front area, Caters to the Technical Diver Offers all levels of recreational instruction from Openwater through instructor NAUI and PADI. Runs a charter boat named the SEA HUNTER. for everyone else who recognize the name, yes this is the original sea hunter from ny now having changed hands a few times. They run deep trips almost every weekend and have a trip to the Buroke (250 ft) Aug 26 & 27 can provide more details if anyone would like - sorry a little bias has probably sneaked through on this one, I'll stop here. A new Dive Boat in VA Beach is the Virginia MAE, I dont have their phone number but they dock at the Va Beach Fishing center and they are in the phone book. A big crew boat and takes lots of divers I believe they are certified for over 40 people, Its a 65 ft boat Another good boat is the Sundowner (804) 481-7136, They are a six-pack boat allows decompression diving, unfortunatly they blew their engine this spring, they should be running again this Fall so keep their number. For the best and most accurate description of VA wrecks get a copy of Gary Gentiles book "shipwrecks of Virginia". My personal favorites are the Ocean Venture 170 ft, Eureka 120 ft and the most famous of va wrecks is the John P. Morgan 100 ft If you need or would like any other info let me know how I can help. and Welcome to VA
