Ian,

Regarding EAD and END, I'm not sure which is better for which meaning. 
I've heard people use "END" for "equivalent nitrogen depth", for
calculating decompression on nitrox, but I've mostly heard it used as
"equivalent narcotic depth", as you suggested.  The only reason I started
using "EAD" instead of "END" is that I started this discussion early on
with George Irving, who uses EAD, and I was just trying to be consistent
with his usage.

Don't trust my beliefs that O2 may cause *more* narcosis than N2 too much
- so far I seem to be the only person who experiences this effect.  It
wouldn't be the first time that I am a freak. But if you notice patterns
in your diving experience that support or refute the idea, I'd certainly
like to hear about them!

I think it's safe to say that, for the depths that any of us will ever be
doing ambient pressure diving to, Helium is not narcotic at all.
