Seriously I think there is factor that has not been mentioned so far.
WILLPOWER. Now I know you can't "will" yourself to not be burned if you 
place your hand in a flame. SOme people can keep it in longer than 
others. Yes tolerance to pain is a factor, but at some point it's just  
plain old will power. I suggest that some divers simply have a "stronger" 
(I do NOT equate this with ANY other factor) mind.
