Win, whoever told you this either doesn't go very deep, or has been too many times. The study to which your mentor is referring was a using simple math at depth in a chamber. Obviously, the smart guys do better. The problem is that narcosis, like other mood altering situations, effects the higher order brain functions first, like emotion and reasoning, so what you have is a dangerous smart guy. What the study went on to point out is that this smartness only applies to familiar situations - when new material is introduced, they all get dumb. The problem with misconstrued material like this is that it is fuel for the deep air ego that thinks they can "handle it". Besides, we are avoiding the subject. See today's Fort Lauderdale News . They have a front page article on the dangers to the nervous system from scuba diving . They conclude that "professional divers breathe mixtures of oxygen and helium". I guess that lets Ronnie Bell off the hook. - George
