Paul,
The last time I had my tank filled at a dive shop they charged me $6, so it
would seem that AIR for divers is not provided free by mother nature. And as
for wether anyone tested it for its component gasses when it was first
made/invented,my basic grasp of evolution seems to indicate that there was
nobody around at the time.But today we now now that AIR is a combination of
gasses (mainly O2 and N2),just as WATER is made up of H2 and O. When you
dive it is not the partial pressure of air that gives you O2 toxicity but
rather the PPO2,it's not AIR that causes inert gas narcosis but rather the
N2. I can accept the fact that like water,air is a naturally occuring
substance but that still does not change the fact that it is a mixture of
different gasses.
